Press Release: Cyprus Action report on the Demographic Situation
in Northern Cyprus
Cyprus Action Network (CAN) releases report on the Demographic Situation
in Northern Cyprus
Cyprus Action Network (CAN), an international NGO established with the goal of drawing attention to ongoing human rights violations in Cyprus, has released its report titled "Demographic Situation and the Electoral Process in Northern Cyprus since 1974 - Why Census and International Monitoring are Necessary" today, August 22, 2003.
In the report, CAN draws attention to the demographic changes that took place in the northern part of Cyprus since the division of the island in 1974 and the implications of these changes especially in relation to the electoral processes within the Turkish Cypriot community. The Network argues for the necessity of an immediate census followed by international monitoring in the upcoming elections in Northern Cyprus. The full report can be found at: http://www.cyprusaction.org/humanrights/elections/demogr.doc or http://www.cyprusaction.org/humanrights/elections/demogr.pdf
The report has been distributed to a wide range of international organizations, politicians, academics and journalists. The members of CAN will undertake several efforts in the upcoming months to draw further attention to the issue within the international community.
