The Attorney General of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) accuses Avrupa Ltd, Shener Levent the editor and Kazım Denizci from Nicosia of publishing material with the seditious intention of creating hatred against and humiliating the state, contrary to articles 20, 47(b) and 48 (a) of Act 154 of the penal code.

The accused, on 1.08.1999, in Nicosia, on the 10th page of Avrupa dated 1.08.1999, serial numbered 683, in the column entitled “From the Readers” under the heading “Let’s Save Our Honour” published the following lines with the seditious intention of creating hatred against and humiliating the state:

“-And now Cemal Ugurshan and his familiy are being thrown out of the house which he repaired with the money he saved by buying less food for his children. The Avrupa newspaper and Shener Levent are again under fire. They are again being attacked for informing the public. Who are accusing them? Those who have surrendered to the establishment and the official status quo. Shener has allegedly exaggerated the events and incited the people. You sychophants… What constitution? What does our constitution say? The state has to provide houses for its citizens. If so, where are those who drafted this constitution? The president, the prime-minister, the so called assembly, the Attorney General who has the habit of expressing opinion on almost every incident, and the others? Where are you? Very high price increases are being imposed. The community doesn’t react… Come on; the Turkish Cypriots…stand on your feet… Get rid of your lethargy. Let’s save our country. Let’s save our sovereignty. Let us as the downtrodden and scorned Turkish Cypriots save our honour.”
