We applaud the recent decision of the Republic of Cyprus for a unilateral destruction of the National Guard minefields and urge the Republic of Cyprus to proceed as speedily as possible with the implementation of this decision. We would also welcome information on advancements made in this area.
Conscientious objection and alternatives to national service are issues that made Cyprus feature in Amnesty International reports.
We would also like to receive information on the treatment of new recruits as well as on the training of the military forces. We would like to know whether Greek Cypriot soldiers are aware of the Geneva Convention which prevents atrocities against civilians and prisoners of war. Finally, we would also like to investigate whether the officers of the National Guard receive education on current developments in international law, norms and standards on war crimes and the conduct of military operations in areas heavily populated by civilians.
