CAN is concerned that the provisions relating to gender equality and domestic violence in the acquis communitaire might not be properly implemented in Cyprus, given the conservative principles that guide family life and gender morality among the wider population. For this reason, we believe that it is necessary to monitor the implementation of the acquis communitaire regarding these issues. We therefore welcome contributions that monitor this implementation. Domestic violence deserves appropriate attention by the Cypriot authorities and more adequate facilities for victims of violence and rape need to be set up. The situation could also be helped through improvements in the system of sex-education in schools, as well as in the facilities that cater funded resources for people with problems of drug- and alcohol- abuse.
